Lorenzos was originally opened by renowned restaurateur Edmond Davari under the name Sardis before he changed it to its current moniker many years ago. It meant the end of an era for the city centre. Lorenzos closed when restaurant owner Michael O’Shaughnessy decided it was no longer viable in the face of soaring utility bills and rent increases. Work started in mid 2022 and is understood to be continuing. In March 2022 it was announced that a new “performing arts” company called 1938 Ltd, named after the year the building was opened, had been set up and leaseholder the Reel Cinemas chain was looking at an “extensive refurbishment” that would see the main auditorium reopened as a 1,000-capacity live music venue. The restaurant unit is situated in the closed down Art Deco former Reel Cinema and Gala Bingo building. Lorenzos shut down last week after 30 years of trading in which it became a magnet for stage stars performing at the nearby Theatre Royal Plymouth.
